7 8 [Next] - I travel a lot and here are some ideas on books: I almost always buy an 'Insight Guide' when considering a country - this series has terrific photos. For the actual trip, the 'Lonely Planet' guides are hard to beat. There are exceptions, but I've found this series the most consistent with the specifics needed for travel. If you are going to the developing world, the 'Pill Book' is great. Often you have to be more proactive in your own treatment when overseas. I've used it way too many times! There is also a pocket Merck Manual. Even though in paperback, both these books are a bit hefty. Audio Books on an MP3 player are great for 3 a.m. when you're awake because of jet lag but don't want to keep the family up with a light. Those little book lights work well too. I don't travel with too many novels, even though I read them a lot on a trip. Instead, I making going to used bookstores part of the journey. Also, I find it fun to swap paperbacks with other travellers. If I do bring a novel, I try to find one that takes place in the country I'm going too. For instance, I read 'In To Thin Air,' in Nepal, 'Room with a View' in Italy, and 'Angela's Ashes' in Ireland. If I know I'm going on a trip, I often rip out magazine or newspaper articles and put them in a file folder. As I travel, I read and toss. A 'coffee table' book of your home region is a good host gift. The same is also good for making conversation with the locals. (photo albums, too.) And don't forget your personal address book! 6-Jun-2004 Craig H ID1638 - A complete ranking of the world's greatest events showing how to get the most fun out of each one.
