2 3 [Next] - In each of the last seven years, we have travelled widely by rental car throughout much of Europe and former Eastern Europe. Never once has anybody been even remotely interested in seeing an International Drivers Licence, nor has it been required on any toll roads. Your own country's licence, passport, and credit card are all you need to drive away in their rental car. The same applies to our multiple visits to the U.S. over many years. On another topic, it's worth noting that in every country town we hired from throughout Europe, the rental company closed around 12 noon on Saturday and did not re-open until Monday, which may leave you stranded without wheels for a weekend. Chris Weston ID2223 - Car rental in Europe is relatively expensive. However, using a European-based broker can save you quite a bit! US-based brokers charge more for rentals in Europe, the way European brokers charge more for rentals in the USA. It's just a matter of target audience. It's a weird world - but that's the way the suppliers (e.g. Hertz, Avis, Europcar, Dollar, etc.) have set it up. Local rates differ from international rates as well. A Frenchman will be charged more for a domestic rental then a foreigner. EasyTerra Car Rental Tjeerd Kramer ID2032 - Rather than dealing with the auto rental companies that are based in the US, when traveling to Europe contact auto-europe. They have a web site and an 800#. They are wholesalers and have gotten us better rates with the same companies. They rent to any place in Europe including eastern Europe. They guarantee their rates, so if there is a problem overseas, they will refund the difference if you are charged differently. Believe me that has happened to us twice and we had no problem. AutoEurope.com AutoEurope.com ID1090 - If you decide to rent a car and need to drive to a location or want to be adventurous ... great! Lock the doors to that fabulous rent a car! Hide any road maps which might tip off a car jacker you are not local to that area. I like to also make sure that there isn't a huge car rental sticker to announce that I'm a visitor either. Contact your car rental company before you arrive regarding that policy and what they might be able to do to help. Most have scaled down their advertising on their cars, specifically to take you off the target list! Adventures with AdventureGirl.com Adventures with AdventureGirl.com ID840 - Car rentals in Europe are often two or three times as expensive as in the United States, France can be very expensive, but!! If you reserve and pay for your hire in the US with a multinational (Hertz, Avis Dollar etc.) for collection in your arrival airport, you can get a good deal, especially if you do it in advance and negotiate a little.
