While some foods and beverages may seem odd, try them and appreciate them. Avoid McDonald`s, Burger King etc. Sample local fares at local cafes and be friendly and courteous. Evan Andriopoulos ID1157 - Hotels in many countries often assess high charges for providing access to your long-distance provider. Save money by making shorter calls direct or using prepaid phone cards from local providers to call from pay phones. Tim Matthews ID1506 - I travel as much as I can and as far as I can. Due to this, I do not see friends and family as often as I would like. To stay in contact with my friends and family, I call and text message them a lot. Doing this when abroad can cost you A LOT of money (trust me). Now a travel friend gave ma a tip just to buy local prepaid sim cards and use to them to call (or better, be called). To do this you often need to unlock your mobile phone, otherwise it will not accept other simcards. I came across unlockathome.com, which is a portal to sites where you can safely unlock the phone yourself easily and use any simcard. Important note: You have to make sure your phone 'band' is compatible with the country you go to. Most new phones are tri-band or quad-band, which will be usuable all over the world. happy traveling! Steven ID2123 - Laws vary greatly from country. Be aware of regulations and laws before you go abroad. What may be a minor infraction in your own country could land you in jail or even facing the death penalty in a foreign jurisdiction. J. Wharton ID2056 - Upon arriving at a new international destination, you might consider taking a taxi instead of roughing it and riding by metro or train (do not spend an arm and a leg for it) because you will more likely be able to see parts of the town. This is a nice way to get a glimpse of your new 'home', and it also gives you a chance to become accustomed to open spaces once again. (This is highly recommended - especially for arrivals to London - we saw so much more on the taxi ride back than we saw during other parts of our trip).
