Scented Cotton Balls

- Instead of lugging bulky, breakable perfume bottles, soak some cotton balls in your favorite scent and stuff them into empty film canisters. Then just use them one at a time - the airtight canisters keep the fragrance fresh!

Secondhand Backpack - Look 'Seasoned'

- Travelling for the first time and alone? Look at buying a backpack secondhand so that it does not look like you are a first time traveller. A used backpack will look as if you have been around the traps a bit.

Security Concerns

- Security is of utmost importance when traveling alone. I wish someone would do a feature 60-minute-type program on this issue. As a B&B owner, and as a single female traveler, here are some tips I've learned throughout my travels:

NEVER take a room in which the desk clerk has mentioned your room number out loud. Make them write the number down.
NEVER open your room door to ANYONE. i.e., maintenance, FLOWER delivery, etc., until you have called down to the front desk to verify the service. You may even ask that two people, one female, be sent should you be expecting anything.

Security for a Woman Traveling by Herself

- When you are going to your room in a hotel, NEVER get your key out of your bag until you are standing in front of the door of your room. If you take your key out of your bag earlier, anybody can see the number of your room.

Security Tip for Short Ladies

- At about 5 feet tall, I have never bought slacks that I didn't have to shorten. I take the unnecessary material and sew a rectangle pouch about 5 inches wide by 3 1/2 inches high, and I use Velcro to close the opening. Then I sew it to the inner side waistband. Good for credit cards, ship ID, color copy of passport, etc. In addition, when shortening T-shirts, the cutoff in 3 inches x 5 inches makes great soft glasses cleaners!
