  • Modems and Foreign Dial Tones

  • - Configure your modem software to ignore dial tones. Most modems made for use in the US won't be able to recognize foreign dial tones and will fail to connect unless re-configured to ignore dial tone.

  • No Dial Tone Detected?

  • - When you're on the road, your dialing software may not recognize the dial tone it hears. You might have run into this problem when the tone changes to let you know you have voicemail. No problem. Just tell your modem to dial without waiting for the tone (it's usually the X1 or X3 command in the software's initialization string). Your modem's documentation should cover this. In Microsoft Windows, this is a pretty easy fix. For example, in Windows 98, open the Control Panel (Start, Settings, Control Panel) and double-click the Modems icon. Select your modem. Click the Properties button, and then click the Connection tab. Deselect Wait For Dial Tone Before Dialing. Click OK twice to close the open dialog boxes. You should be all set.

  • Notebook Hard Drive Conservation

  • - If you're attempting to conserve disk space on an older notebook, try installing only components you really need. Use the Custom Installation selection when you install new software. And consider uninstalling software that you don't need - like add-ons that came with your software - and clearing the disk cache from your browser.

  • PDA Charging

  • - If you carry one of the newer color screen battery draining PDA's or just have a need to charge your PDA on the road no need to carry along your brick charger. Most PDA's have available a 'Charge and Sync' cable that you can hook to your laptop's USB port - and as well as synchronizing and transferring duties, it doubles as a PDA charger. Not all travel cables do the charging, so make sure you ask for it specifically.

  • Phone Jack Adaptors

  • - If you are traveling with a laptop and need to use a modem, you may need to purchase an adaptor to allow you to plug your phone cord into the foreign phone outlet. Be aware that some phone lines may be hard wired at the wall. If so, you may need a patch cord kit to access the phone line.
