  • Protect Your Computer's Data

  • - One of the big issues now in travel is computers and computer devices. For people traveling in and out of America, one of the biggest issues is Security taking and sifting through data on laptops or even cell phones. Even worse, they take your computer into another room and access it without you present.

Granted, they are trying to keep hacked data from being transported in or out of the country, but we have no idea what else they might be doing in the process (adding unwanted material to your computer, viruses, spyware, etc. who knows?) They are the government and they are the last people I would trust with my computer without me present.

Truecrypt is a program solution to keep all of your personal material from being accessed without your permission. It is a free, open-source download.

  • Pulse Noises/Tax Impulses

  • - A 'pulse noise' or 'tax impulse' is a pulse - inaudible by the human ear - that is generated by phone companies to meter the length of telephone connections, usually for taxing purposes. Common only in Austria, Belgium, the Czech Republic, Germany, India, Spain and Switzerland, pulse noises can interfere with or interrupt modem communications. The accepted solution for this modem connectivity problem is a tax-impulse or pulse-noise filter, which filters out the offending pulses and preserves the integrity of the modem connection.

  • Research ISPs in Advance

  • - If you are going to access the internet while abroad, plan ahead. ISP offerings vary extensively in convenience and price, so finding the right solution at a reasonable price can entail substantial research.

  • Save Precious Laptop and Notebook Battery Power

  • - A few simple tricks can mean precious moments of juice on the road. If you don't need sound and can turn it off, do so. Also, consider removing PC Cards when not in use. Even when the notebook isn't accessing these cards, they can drain battery power. You can also lower the monitor resolution and reduce brightness on your monitor to save power.

  • Speed Up Portable Drives

  • - If you run Windows 98, Windows ME, or Windows 2000 on your laptop and use a portable drive when traveling, a Windows 98 setting can help speed access to your drives. Right-click your My Computer icon and choose System Properties. Click the Performance Tab, and then click the File System button. Under Removable Disk, check the Enable Write-Behind Caching On All Removable Disk Drives and then click OK twice to exit. This operation tells your laptop to use RAM to speed up access to files on your portable drive.
