  • Shall We Make It Two?

  • - 'Shall we make it two?' are magic words. For faster seating at lunch (and to make the most of networking opportunities), remember (and use) them the next time you attend a convention.

  • Snag a First Class Toiletry Kit

  • - Most airlines hand out very nice toiletry kits to their first class and business class passengers on international flights. These usually include a travel toothbrush and toothpaste, mouthwash, shaving cream, razor, comb, lotion, socks, sleeping masks, and earplugs, among other things. I received a first class kit ten years ago when I was bumped from economy to business on my first transatlantic flight (they were out of business class kits) and it served as my toiletry bag for eight years (it was real leather!) Another kit I received from KM was a miniature vinyl drop bag, and my husband used it for several years. I use it now for shorter trips. Not all passengers who receive the kits use them, and most don't use everything in them. If you're flying economy, and exit through the business or first class cabin, snag one of these left-behind kits if you see one (the airlines cannot reuse them). You may have to 'sanitize' the toothbrush or earplugs in the microwave or in boiling water, but they and other items will be perfect to add to your travel comfort/toiletry kit. You can then travel with some first class amenities, even if you're stuck in steerage. I'm convinced that the (previously unused) earplugs I snagged on a recent United flight preserved my sanity on the 9-hour return transatlantic trip from Paris to Chicago with 30 hyper talkative French teenagers on board (some kind of a school trip, I think).

  • Spread the Workload

  • - When traveling with family or friends, split up jobs. Don't do everything yourself and avoid doubling up. For example, if someone is better at using a video camera, 'assign' that duty to that person. Same is true for taking still photos, journalling, or audio taping. This cuts down on how much each person carries (good tip when on tours). When you get home, it is easy to make copies of the tapes, have multiple prints made at time of developing (usually cheaper, too, then getting reprints), and photocopying journal pages.

  • Spreadable Butter

  • - I take advantage of the free continental breakfasts at most chain hotels to enjoy a couple of pieces of toast each morning. A recent stay at a major chain found the butter in the little packets in a refrigerator. Nice touch, but for a quick eat-and-run it makes it almost impossible to spread the butter. Now I just place it on the toaster while my bread is toasting, and by the time my toast pops up the butter has melted just enough from the heat of the toaster to make spreading a cinch.

  • Stuck in an Unfamiliar City?

  • - Stuck over the weekend in an unfamiliar city? I check the hotel lobby for that big rack of tourist information pamphlets. During my most recent stay I found a coupon for a free appetizer at the local restaurant and 2 or 3 neat places to go within a couple of hours' drive.
