  • Use the Mail

  • - If you find that you have purchased too many souvenirs and you have no room for them, you can take them to one of those mail store places and have them pack and ship it to your house. The place I went even held it a day so that it wouldn't get there before I got home. I even shipped some luggage at the end of my trip because I didn't want to lug it around the airport.

  • Using Consolidator Sites For Lowest Rates

  • - You'd think the hotel's actual site would provide the lowest room rate. My experience has been that consolidators like http://www.orbitz.com and even http://www.ehotelssearch.com actually post lower rates than the hotel site itself. My experience was with Comfort Inn - not sure this advice applies to all hotels and hotel chains. But it certainly doesn't hurt to do your homework before booking.

  • VISA Check Card

  • - I keep a seperate bank account just for travel and vacations. I fund it with any 'extra' money (dividends, tax refund, my change jar, garage sale proceeds, etc.) and I have a VISA check card for the account. When traveling, I carry $200-$300 cash and keep the check card in a safe place. It can be used as a VISA for purchases or as an ATM card for cash withdrawals on a daily basis. They usually have a limit of $500 cash withdrawal daily - helps you keep track of how much you are spending and if you get your pocket picked, you won't lose your entire vacation fund. ATMs are everywhere these days, especially airports. Also keeps me from being tempted to spend more than I have allotted for each vacation.

  • Visit the Local Library

  • - Public libraries are often great resources for local news of what's happening in a place, with events that newspapers might not carry. They often have complimentary tickets, flyers, and brochures that may have flown out of travel offices or the chamber of commerce office.

  • Wash Clothes On-The-Go?

  • - Here's how to wash clothes 'on-the-go'. Pack a few ounces of laundry detergent in a small plastic travel bottle. Also pack a slightly larger spray bottle that can be filled with water. If your clothes aren't really dirty, but only need freshening, mix the detergent with some water in the spray bottle, spray the soapy mixture on the underarms, down the shirt front, etc., of the garments. Then step into the shower, wash yourself and rinse the clothing at the same time. Let the clothes drip in the shower overnight and, most times, they'll be dry the next day.
