  • Avoid Expensive Long Distance Bills

  • - Sometimes, making a simple telephone call can be a nightmare when you're on the road. And it gets even worse when you get home and find EXPENSIVE bills from a whole bunch of phone companies, even some that you've never heard of before. Here's a simple way to avoid those unwanted, expensive bills:
    • Always use a touch tone phone
    • Dial '00' (Push the '0' operator button TWO times, instead of just once)
    • Listen for the name of the long distance company connected to that telephone.
    • If you hear the name of YOUR OWN long distance company, go ahead and use that phone, just the way you always do.
    • If you hear the name of a DIFFERENT long distance company, you might want to consider trying to find a phone that is connected to your company.

  • Backpacking Freshener

  • - I own and operate a hiking outfitter and guide business. We pack llamas and walk several miles a day in the mountains and canyons of Utah. We get quite grimy and sticky with no bath water in the backcountry. The best freshener and body cleanser I've found is old-fashioned Witch Hazel and flat cotton pads. IN the privacy of your tent, swab yourself down and be refreshed. No alcohol ... no burn.

  • Be Wary of 'Free' Travel Connecting Services

  • - Something to think about when you are seeking a travel companion: Look carefully at free services offering to connect people. Everyone loves a bargain, but free services may not include address checks (costly and time-consuming). Convicts and scam artists can join and they will. 'Free' also attracts the worst type of travel partners — freeloaders.

  • Before You Do a 4x4 Tour

  • - Before starting out on a 4x4 travel adventure, it's a good idea to attend a one-day 4x4 driving course - where you will be taught all about traction and stability control, tyre pressures, cross-axling, wheel spin, and rollover angles. You will experience driving up and down gradients, on sand, grass, mud, rocks, and water. You will also crawl up side slopes and will have to cope with stall starts. In addition, you will learn that in serious off-roading, 4x4 drivers look after their personal safety and treat the environment with respect.

  • Beware of Overpriced Taxi Prices

  • - When taking a taxi from the airport to your hotel, let the concierge pay for the taxi fare, telling him you will reumburse immediately. This avoids overpriced trips!
