  • Dining Lean

  • - Do you gain weight on your travels? Many people do since they eat out in restaurants. Here are some tips for eating healthy in any restaurant.
    • Don't go starving. Have a snack before you go out to eat. Upon check-in ask for a fruit basket, and bring instant oatmeal or dried fruit to munch on.
    • Ask the manager. Servers are NOT privy to how food is prepared. Ask the manager for suggestions on healthier options or substitutions.
    • Order the portion size you want. If you were brought up with the 'clean plate' mentality, order just what you want/need. Request just a 4-oz. steak, just one roll (rather than a basket), or a 1-cup portion of pasta. They may even discount your meal, but at least you won't overdo it.
    • Ask for special orders. The pasta meal can be prepared with 1/2 the cream sauce - a good break from the red sauce, still tasty, but with 1/3 less calories. Ask for a dry bun with your sandwich. Substitute fruit for the coleslaw. Request them not to brush the steak or fajitas with butter/oil. Tell them you'd rather have pretty thighs than pretty meat!

  • Do it Backwards

  • - All the locals know the secret for visiting mega attractions like Disney World. Do you know the secret? After passing the entrance gate, instead of walking to the RIGHT with the rest of the crowds, turn and walk to the LEFT and circle the park's attractions backwards! You'll beat the masses to all the rides! You'll be happy you did!

  • Do Not Use the Word 'Fanny' in Australia or New Zealand

  • - Please if you travel to Australia or New Zealand: Do not use the term 'fanny pack'. 'Fanny' is a not nice word for a woman's private parts, not your rear end.

  • Don't Advertise Your Address

  • - When standing in a queue at the airport waiting to check in, watch it if strangers engage you in conversation, asking where you are going and how long for etc. They may be looking for your address on a baggage tag, and you could come home to an empty house. If they leave the line before checking in, be doubly suspicious of their intentions.

Obtain a specific credit card for use only overseas, apply a strict limit, and cancel it when you get home. Many travellers have been stung by businesses using their credit card after they have been to a store, or after giving them to receptionists at hotels for incidentals. Getting a staff member's name from his or her nametag is ideal if you can.

  • Don't Bother with Laundry!

  • - Pack a heavy duty plastic sack and some brown packing paper and tape, then mail your soiled laundry home the day before you leave your travel destination. You'll arrive home before it does, and it makes your luggage so much lighter to carry!
