  • To Do, or Not to Do?

  • - Yes, I agree to leave a name, address and phone in your luggage, but DO NOT put your HOME address on the identification. Put your work address and phone only. Luggage thieves will know you're not home, know your home address, and you may come home to an unhappy surprise.

  • Today's Luggage

  • - Insure any valuables not normally covered by your airline. Be sure to find out what they cover!

  • Two-Part Suitcase

  • - If travelling for two weeks or less, always opt for a 'two-part' suitcase (the type with a larger bottom bag WITH wheels, a telescoping handle, and a detachable smaller top bag). Every airline I've flown will consider these a carryon. You can put the larger bag (clothes and things you are not likely to need) in the overhead compartment, and the smaller bag (snacks, books, money, gum, passport, etc.) with you on your lap or under the seat. You NEVER have to worry about lost, damaged, or stolen luggage again! You'll thank me when you breeze right through the airport, passing by all the unfourtunates waiting at the baggage claim wondering when (sometimes if) their bags will come through. This also saves you time so you won't be late for your connection.

  • Use a Collapsible Cooler for Extra Luggage

  • - Pack a collapsible cooler in your luggage - the canvas type. Use it in your room filled with ice to keep food you buy at the grocer's fresh; milk for cereal, cream for coffee, yogurt, that sort of thing. You will save money and time, and I find it rather nice not to have to rush out in the morning before I'm ready just to silence my growling stomach. On the trip home, use it as an extra piece of luggage. Just be sure to use the kind that has a removable liner so you don't have to be too vigilant about making sure it's totally clean and dry before you pack to return home.

  • Uses For Zip-Lock Baggies

  • - Take gallon-sized zip-lock baggies. The heavier duty the better. They are useful for packing things that may leak (such as shampoo, lotions, etc.) and you can use them once you get to where you are going for a variety of things. Some are: dirty diapers or muddy clothing when you are away from your room; to keep a clean change of clothes dry at the pool or the beach; to put your wet swimsuit in after you change into those clean, dry clothes. I'm sure you will come up with many more ideas yourself!!
