  • Foiling Pickpockets

  • - When going overseas, particularly I found in Rome, there is a severe pickpocketing problem. I suggest bringing a neck pouch, which will hold money, credit cards, and valuables under your clothes to avoid being robbed. Look in the luggage section of most department stores.

  • Fold-Up Paper Fan

  • - Always bring a small fold-up paper fan for those times you're stuck outside in the heat or inside a stuffy location (e.g., waiting in long ticket lines for events or museums, at the post office, on the tarmac while your plane is in that long takeoff line and the air conditioning shuts down). I carry my $.59 Chinese fan from Cost Plus everywhere with me, at home or abroad.

  • Folding Scissors

  • - The best travel tip anyone ever gave me was to always carry a pair of small folding scissors ... A thousand uses and I'm never without them.

  • Garbage Bags

  • - Never leave on any trip without two or three garbage bags in your pack or suitcase. They take up almost no space at all and can have countless uses. I've used garbage bags as pack covers, as extra insulation for a sleeping bag, to patch holes in a tarp, as a raincoat (in an emergency) and as a waterproof layer inside baggage. Once you travel with garbage bags, you'll wonder how you got along without them.

  • Ginger Pieces

  • - When traveling by air overseas, pack in your carry-on a small bag of ginger pieces. You can chew on these when you start to feel airsick and queezy. They help your stomach settle down.
