  • Trash Bags
    - Pack a small plastic trash bag for each person to put their soiled clothing in before returning it to the luggage.

  • Travel 'Tool Kit'
    - Over the years I have found a little tool kit invaluable. I use a fabric sided Dopp kit for mine ... light/strong. In the kit I have duct tape, small vise-grip pliers, regular pliers, two screwdrivers, one phillips head, small needle nose pliers, small box of various size jewelers screwdrivers, roll of electrician's black plastic tape, old toothbrush (for cleaning parts or connections) variety of electrical plugs for making conversion from local current/plug type to US, 2 wooden pencils, 10 big safety pins, small tube of epoxy glue, and a handful of other items. I have used it to repair everything from TV sets in hotel rooms, to broken or ripped luggage, to an air conditioner that leaked in Africa, to holding ends of 2 wires together so car would run, to loose or broken glasses. Wouldn't leave home without it.

  • Travel Clocks
    - Travel clocks with multiple time zones are as cheap and compact as regular travel alarm clocks. They allow you to see what time it is back home so that you can call at a reasonable hour. They're also handy for when you make calls to your destination from home.

  • Travel First Aid Kit
    - I always carry a travel first aid kit with Bandaids, Tums, Aspirin, bee sting wipes, etc. With all the walking you are bound to get a blister and with all the different food, an upset stomach is likely. I feel much more comfortable knowing I have medicine and not having to track down an open pharmacy. This tip was reinforced in Spain, when a travel mate was ill and all stores were closed for siesta.

  • Travel Iron
    - Take a small travel iron with a built-in converter. Use a damp towel when steam is needed. Make sure to take an international adapter plug with you when traveling abroad.
