  • Friendly Bacteria

  • - Eat yogurt two weeks before you leave - this builds up a "friendly" bacteria in your system and you can then tolerate more things. Drink bottled water and no ice. (Better hotels have their own ice making that uses purified water). In third world countries only eat cooked food or fruit that can be peeled (bananas or oranges) - raw food (salads, etc.) may not have been cleaned properly.

  • Fun Reading

  • - Pick out a book for 'fun reading' set in the country you are about to visit. Your fictional journey through the country will put you in the mood to enjoy the sights and experiences to come.

  • Gather These Numbers before You Leave Home

  • - A cell phone address book can save your day. I keep several entries in my cell phone that I update prior to each trip - hotel, airline, taxi, etc. Before I leave, I enter the contact information and confirmation numbers for all reservations, and call someone I know in the area to get the phone number for a local taxi service (or ask the hotel for one once I arrive).

This has saved me many headaches over the years. If ever we find ourselves stranded or lost, we are able to call the hotel for help to find the nearest bus, train, or subway station, or getting walking directions back to the hotel. When all else fails, we can call for a taxi. Travelling with these same three phone numbers on a card in your wallet can suffice when you are outside your cell coverage area; just make sure that you also carry enough local coin for a payphone call.
