Your fictional journey through the country will put you in the mood to enjoy the sights and experiences to come. Tina Littell ID567 - A cell phone address book can save your day. I keep several entries in my cell phone that I update prior to each trip - hotel, airline, taxi, etc. Before I leave, I enter the contact information and confirmation numbers for all reservations, and call someone I know in the area to get the phone number for a local taxi service (or ask the hotel for one once I arrive). This has saved me many headaches over the years. If ever we find ourselves stranded or lost, we are able to call the hotel for help to find the nearest bus, train, or subway station, or getting walking directions back to the hotel. When all else fails, we can call for a taxi. Travelling with these same three phone numbers on a card in your wallet can suffice when you are outside your cell coverage area; just make sure that you also carry enough local coin for a payphone call. Adrienne ID2094 - Paint your bags with big, bright designs - much easier to identify and less likely to be duplicated than a ribbon or elastic band; also, less likely to be stolen because you look like a cheap, bohemian artist or something. If your bag rips, sew it up, and then patch it with duct tape. The duct tape is waterproof, and makes your bag still more identifiable and less likely to be robbed. If you can't afford a new bag, how can you have anything of value in it, right? Perry Raye ID643 - If you're planning a longer stay overseas it might be a good idea to get a cash card from a bank. Once overseas you can withdraw money from your account periodically. You won't have to carry lots of money around, and you'll also save on the exchange rates that change all the time. Franny Canestorp ID634 - You can save a bundle of money when calling home from a hotel, pay phone, or cell phone if you have a toll-free number that rings to your home. Toll-free service is available from many carriers for no set-up cost, with no additional monthly fee, and with low per-minute fees.
