  • Group Identification

  • - When traveling in a large group, it is helpful to either tie the same brightly colored ribbon or affix brightly colored tape on each and every piece of luggage (even carry-ons). This aids in being able to spot each other's luggage at all times. Also, when claiming bags, have only a few people from your group at the conveyor belt. As the 'color coded' bags come by, they can pull everyone's bags and place them into a pile away from the congestion of people trying to get their bags off the conveyor belt. Once the group's bags have been pulled aside, then the rest of your group can claim their bags.

  • GSM Wireless for Overseas

  • - Rent a GSM (Global System for Mobiles) wireless phone before you leave the United States. US phones do not work in Europe, Asia, and elsewhere. For as a small daily fee, you can have one phone, with one number, that will work in over 92 countries worldwide. These are great for the business traveller, families leaving the kids at home, or anyone who just wants to stay in touch.

  • How do You Select a Great B&B?

  • - Ask what they served for breakfast this morning. Was it buffet or sit down? Can you walk to shops? Do they use hotel quality mattresses? (If yes, say no!) Does the innkeeper live on the premises? (If no, say no - or you'll be staying at a 'hotel by another name'.)

  • ID Cards

  • - Before travelling abroad I print up a quantity - about 6 - credit card size cards which I laminate. These cards will carry information on important telephone numbers, insurance policy numbers, flight numbers, travellers' cheque numbers, etc. These cards can then be placed in wallets, baggage, and clothing. Should I run into difficulty I then have the necessary info in a variety of places - and being credit card size they will not take up masses of space.

  • Immunizations and Medications

  • - Be sure all of your shots are up to date, and have extra medication in case you are delayed on your return home.
