  • Travellers' Water Boiler

  • - When planning to stay in a small inn with no microwave or coffee maker, check local power requirements and bring a traveller's water boiler. This comes handy when you need a hot drink or a cup of noodles. It works especially when you are visiting a high-cost city. A small water boiler only costs the price of 6-8 hot drinks.

  • Trip Cancellation Insurance

  • - If ever ignorance is not bliss, it is when it comes to your health and safety. For example, getting sick just before you leave is devastating to say the least, but even worse still is having to pay for the this trip. So get cancellation insurance when you book - just in case. This advice I learned the hard way could have saved me close to $800.

  • Trip Checklist

  • - Keep a Trip Checklist which includes things you want to be sure to take care of before your departure. It might include such things as putting a 'hold' on your mail and newspapers, turning your hot water heater to the lowest setting, unplugging your computer, watering all plants, connecting a timer to turn on lamps, making sure all appliances such as irons and coffee makers are turned off, setting security system, notifying a neighbor that you will be away. Check these items off as you take care of them, and enjoy your trip knowing you haven't left necessary tasks undone!

  • Try Local Car Rentals

  • - If hiring a self-drive car abroad, contact local firms (find them on the net). We have always found them much more reasonable than the international groups. But check that you are fully covered by insurance. Hiring a slightly older car can also save a great deal.

  • Try Self-Guided Audio Tours

  • - A good alternative to classic guidebooks is to use self-guided audio tours. If a tour is produced in standard MP3 format, you can play it not only on an MP3 player, but on any computer, PDA, and most newer mobile phones.

If you plan to visit Bratislava, capital of Slovakia in Central Europe, the only available audio guide is available at Bratislava Audio Tour.
