The shopping is fabulous (and cheap) but while I was there I was embarrassed by the number of Americans loudly arguing with merchants about prices that were already less than half what we would pay in the U.S. Remember you are a visitor in THEIR country and you are a representative of your own country. Martin V ID310 - If you want to find a good family beach resort near Bangkok, then Hua Hin is definitely worth considering. Just over 2 hours by new highway from Bangkok there are pleasant beaches, and a good range of accomodation from cheap to truly expensive. Shopping is very cheap, even compared to Bangkok. Lovely restaurants and fresh sea breezes. It is also great if you have kids along as this resort seems not to 'allow' some of the night-life things you could come across in other resort areas. Very charming small town, but all the big hotel names are there, Hilton, Marriot, Sofitel, Dusit, Regent etc. Excellent golf courses too. Toni Chengson ID207 - I would always recommend seeking out a holiday villa for rent instead of a hotel. Not only do you enjoy a larger property with more privacy and comfort, but you will also be able to integrate into the local community better, especially in areas that are away from the main tourist cities, and in villas that are not part of a hotel's room stock. A holiday home does not always mean a minimum rental period, or the hassles of self-catering. Furthermore, you can gain on airfares. Rather than crowding with all the package tourists onto heavily trafficked routes, go with the locals and enjoy discounted fares to regional airports.
