Australia Bound, Mate?

- Coming to Australia? Well you need to pre-plan as best you can to ensure a smooth trip once you are here!

First of all, work out a rough itinerary for yourself. We are a big country, so if you want to take in the major sites you will either have to fly or drive a long way. But it can done - and Australians are always keen to help make sure you have a happy visit.
If you need wheelchair accessible vehicles, make sure you have the vehicle booked before you arrive. The demand for such vehicles has peaks and troughs; you do not want to miss out. Be sure your accommodation is accessible and that if you need a commode chair or special equipment that they know where to hire it for you (or you for them).
Getting from the various capital city airports to the city or your place of stay can not always be done by bus (unlike London). So, find out the transport situation before you arrive! The last thing you want to do after a 20-hour flight is to start guessing what to do next. Plan it.

Avoid Closed Roads in W. Australia

- When travelling in the north of Western Australia do NOT drive on any CLOSED road (dirt-gravel) as it will cost you dearly, about $200 per tyre!!! The rain, when it does rain, makes the roads almost impassable and very expensive to repair if fellow travellers try to traverse them. Distance is enormous up there and help can be a long wait. But it is worth seeing!!!

- There are various methods of booking B&Bs in Australia. Your travel agent is usually not the best. B&B Australia, located in Sydney, NSW can book you anywhere - find them on the web. Check out the Australian B&B Book on the web for info and pics or Dawsons. Get your travel info from the Australian Tourism Commission - it's free. They also have an accommodation link.

Australia is vast like the US but you can drive a whole day without seeing a soul in the outback. You need to pack accordingly. Coastal Australia is less remote and far more civilized. Allow about 3 hours driving time between destinations. That's about 300 km. Consider charter flights and hire cars for remote/difficult/touring destinations or one-day hops.

Driving in Australia

- Greetings and Gidday from Downunder!

International visitors often underestimate the distances between Australian towns and cities, and the amount of time it takes to travel by road around Australia, which is almost as big as the United States.

The relatively small population (19 million) lives predominently on the coastal fringes, with distances of 200 km. (125 miles) or more common between regional and rural towns, sometimes connected by poorly engineered and maintained roads.

If you intend to stay in the major towns and drive only on highways, an automatic-shift vehicle will be sufficient for most people.

If you intend to do a self drive holiday off the beaten track or through more than one state, then you'll need to be a competent and confident driver, especially if you are inexperienced with distance driving.

It is highly advised to 'Stop, Revive, Survive' evey 2 hours when driving. During school holidays and long weekends, volunteer organizations (usually the local Lions, Apex, or Service Club) provide free refreshments at designated 'Driver Reviver' stations, but whenever you travel in Australia, you should schedule regular stops, especially if you are doing a long trip, like Sydney-Brisbane-Cairns, or similar driving tour.
