- In Australia, the least expensive way to see the country and stay overnight is by renting a car and staying at coach camps (these are private campgrounds around the country). These campgrounds have coaches or camp-trailers for rent by the night or any length of time you wish to stay while seeing the sights around the area. Each camp-trailer has a comfortable bed, all the cooking utensils needed as well as coffee/tea pots, toaster, etc., plus a washroom. The cost for these stays is less than a motel or hotel or bed & breakfast. You get help from the owner or your fellow campers on road conditions, things to see and do, and shopping. We self-toured for 2 months doing this trip around Australia. If we had stayed in conventional housing and ate in restaurants all the time, we could have only stayed 3 weeks. Wayne Wodrich ID68 - We saw many 'professional' pickpockets in the Circuler Quey area. Especially on weekends, there are many people strolling around and they pay too much attention to street performers. Keep your handbag between your body and arm firmly, and occasionally turn your head and look around while the street peformance is on. Carry enough water for 5 days and in the event of an accident or breakdown, wait for help. If you travel in a really remote area, notify someone of your travel plans and carry navigation and communications equipment:

It takes some time to get to know the locals and feel comfortable on your visit - and this can take some time in a big city. Why not head out of the city to smaller communities in the countryside? There the prices for accommodation are cheaper, and people have more time to get to know you. Don't use a tour company with a busload of people to take you there - check out the surrounding communities on the internet (on sites like this); find an interesting place to go; some affordable accommodation; and check out local train schedules - there is probably a train leaving every hour to where you want to go. If you're visiting Sydney, all this information is on our website for the Southern Highlands of NSW - less than 2 hours from the city. Welcome to the Southern Highlands of N.S.W.
