  • Bargains on the Trains in Germany
    - Although German trains are generally very expensive, there are also some terrific bargains to be found. The best one is the weekend ticket. This is good 'one day' on the weekend (i.e., until a few hours after midnight of the next day) all over Germany back and forth as much as you please. It can only be used on 'local' (i.e., not Interregio, IR, IC, and ICE) trains; but these, with a little patience and time on your part, will take you everywhere the expresses go and then some. The ticket currently costs DM 40 (under $20) and is good for up to 5 people traveling together.

  • Pay Attention on the Autobahn
    - Many people in the world would love to go to Germany to drive a car on the Autobahn. Everyone thinks that you can drive as fast as possible there ... but it is not really true. There are parts of the Autobahn were you can drive as fast as your car, and of course the traffic allows you to. BUT not everywhere! Watch the signs!!! Many parts allow just 120 km. per hour!! If you want to go to a big city, leave the car outside if you just want to do some sightseeing! There are just a few parking spots ... and they are so little compared to American (just imagine you are looking for a place for your car in Times Square!) If the traffic light is red, do not turn right! Gas is expensive. If I were you, I would take the train!

  • Stretch Your Budget
    - Remember that prices can vary tremendously across the country. You will pay more in the big cities and around the major tourist attractions. You can save a lot of money if you stay off the beaten path. You will be surprised how much money you can save by staying only 10 minutes outside of Munich. Sometimes you will find that these off the beaten path villages have more culture in them than the big cities.

  • Traffic Light Know-How
    - Remember that in Germany, a blinking yellow traffic light does NOT mean you have the right of way! If your light is blinking yellow, the traffic light for other traffic is most likely turned off. I know a few Americans who nearly were in terrible traffic accidents because they thought that their blinking yellow meant 'caution - but you have the right of way'.
