  • Enjoy Quiet, Endless Beaches in Sithonia, Halkidiki, Greece new

  • - People have been going to Greece since the 70s for the awesome beaches and the islands. Most Greek beaches, though, are pebble and rock. We were let in on a tip from a Greek friend about Sithonia, Halkidiki. In the north of Greece, by Thessaloniki, it is the three prongs that dip down into the Aegean. There you can find endless beaches; one of them in Nikiti is 32 km long; and the best is that there are virtually no people. This is really a paradise with mountains where you can hike, mountain bike, go sailing ... the list is endless. There is a Sithonia Greece travel guide dedicated to just this peninsula that gives everything you need to know about Sithonia. If you get a chance, enjoy it while it lasts!

  • Avoid the Crowds in Sithonia, Halkidiki, Greece

  • - If you want to do a Greek beach vacation and wish to avoid the crowds, check out Sithonia. Sithonia is a peninsula in northern Greece where foreigners don't really go to - mostly locals. The beaches are spectacular; you can find an isolated cove for yourself and the water is so clear. I was impressed with the prices. They are much lower than the normal greek tourist destinations. There are some pictures on SithoniaGreece.com with maps for how to reach the beaches. Many of them are really isolated, but worth the effort. This is the place to go if you want to unwind and destress.

  • To Plan or Not to Plan

  • - When travelling in Greece, do not plan anything in advance. Do as the Greeks do. Have a let's see what happens attitude, especially when visiting the islands. Travel agencies in Athens do not know ferry or bus schedules to go anywhere. If you want to take the ferry to the Ionic islands take the Patras ferry; if you want to see the Adriatic islands go to either Pireus or Raffina. The bus schedules can only be found at the bus depot. Nice or budget hotels in the islands are not listed in the hotel books (found at travel agencies in Canada). You'll find out for yourself when you get there. Ask around the island - somehow, somewhere, somebody can speak English.
