1 2 3 [Next] - Be very careful when traveling Italy. I had both my cameras and passports stolen. It seems that people ride the night trains and will gas the compartments and after knocking you out take what they want and leave the rest. I asked the people at the embassy in Rome if they knew about this, and was told they were aware of it but because it cannot be proved, it is not in the travel advisories. It seems that the only thing you can do to protect yourself against this is to leave the window open in your compartment. Also be very careful of your luggage in the train stations. If you are distracted for one second it will cost you a bag. 1-Jan-2000 Bill Travaglini ID1112 - In the summer months, between June and August, lines at major museums such as the Uffizi in Florence and the Vatican Museums in Rome can be several hours long, especially on weekends. Get there early (as in 7:30 am in some cases) or book your tickets online or by telephone after you arrive in Italy. About.com Italy for Visitors 18-Dec-2003 About.com Italy for Visitors ID1107 - When traveling in Italy, especially Rome, be very aware of your surroundings! I was grabbed many times in the subway and train station areas. Place things of value deep in your front pocket and keep your hands in your pockets. Wear a wrap around hide-a-belt for your credit cards and money. Thievery is rampant in the tourist areas. Just watch where you open your wallet and keep aware to avoid theft. I think New York City is safer to walk around in than Rome, Italy - but don't let this discourage you ... the sights provide ample refuge from the thievery. 1-Jan-2000 Joe Smith ID1110 - It's very sad to read that all the tips about Italy talk about thieves. I must admit it's very easy to get robbed, but don't get too scared. If you pay attention you'll be fine! Many people abroad don't know Turin - it's where the shroud is - and it's becoming a nice place. You can find a wonderful Egyptian museum - one of the most important in the world! Please don't think about Italy just as the region of thieves! 1-Jan-2000 Cristina Caimotto ID1108 - Beware of cunning Gypsies in Milan, Italy. We were in line to see Da Vinci's Last Supper when a female Gypsy approached a women in line and shoved a newspaper at her, covering her fanny pack. She was hollering and trying to get the woman to buy the paper, which was obviously old and used. While this was going on another Gypsy was busy unzipping the fanny pack and trying to remove the woman's wallet. Luckily we saw what was going on and warned the woman. The Gypsies just moved on down the line and tried it again! 1-Jan-2000 Barbara Grier ID1109 Would You Like to Add a Travel Tip?We welcome QUALITY travel tips from our users.Note: you will be required to enter the characters from a security image, so please make sure that you have your browser set to view images.
