  • Advisory

  • - Be very careful when traveling Italy. I had both my cameras and passports stolen. It seems that people ride the night trains and will gas the compartments and after knocking you out take what they want and leave the rest. I asked the people at the embassy in Rome if they knew about this, and was told they were aware of it but because it cannot be proved, it is not in the travel advisories. It seems that the only thing you can do to protect yourself against this is to leave the window open in your compartment. Also be very careful of your luggage in the train stations. If you are distracted for one second it will cost you a bag.

  • Avoid Long Waits

  • - In the summer months, between June and August, lines at major museums such as the Uffizi in Florence and the Vatican Museums in Rome can be several hours long, especially on weekends. Get there early (as in 7:30 am in some cases) or book your tickets online or by telephone after you arrive in Italy.

  • Avoid Pickpockets at Tourist Traps in Rome

  • - Rome is no different than any other major city in the world. As long as you aware of the problems, you will be able enjoy this beautiful city.

Pickpockets (generally referred to as gypsies) are extremely active around the main tourist sites, even inside major churches! The number 64 is a favourite for pickpockets running between the main train station, Termini and St. Peter's.

If you see mothers holding babies with a blanket and/or rough-looking kids showing you an old newspaper or a piece of cardboard, hold onto your possessions!

Do not keep all your money in one place. Do not carry your backpack on your back on public transport, and be extra careful in crowded areas.

  • Be Aware

  • - When traveling in Italy, especially Rome, be very aware of your surroundings! I was grabbed many times in the subway and train station areas. Place things of value deep in your front pocket and keep your hands in your pockets. Wear a wrap around hide-a-belt for your credit cards and money. Thievery is rampant in the tourist areas. Just watch where you open your wallet and keep aware to avoid theft. I think New York City is safer to walk around in than Rome, Italy - but don't let this discourage you ... the sights provide ample refuge from the thievery.

  • Enjoy Italy

  • - It's very sad to read that all the tips about Italy talk about thieves. I must admit it's very easy to get robbed, but don't get too scared. If you pay attention you'll be fine! Many people abroad don't know Turin - it's where the shroud is - and it's becoming a nice place. You can find a wonderful Egyptian museum - one of the most important in the world! Please don't think about Italy just as the region of thieves!
