- Turkey is a lovely country with many fine sights. However, we were taken badly on a jewelry purchase in Antalya. The tour guide took us to one of those 'for tourist only' shops that sell a bit of everything in a remote area where the buses stop and you have no choice but to go in. We bought a piece of jewelry for over $1000 with the assurance that we would get our 17% VAT duty back at the airport on the way home. They did not provide the proper documentation and we got zero. After phone calls, faxes, and major put offs we still have nothing. Do not buy jewelry in Turkey without knowing what these documents are and how they work. An expensive lesson for something I could have bought in any department store in the US for less. 1-Jan-2000 Joan Ahrens ID1116 - While travelling in Turkey (have a great time -clean, inexpensive, great food): Take overnight bus trips to farther destinations. Bring prepakaged bath towlettes for a 'sponge bath' at end of bus trip. Also when buying a carpet, take a photo of it. I suggest shipping it to Istanbul, and taking it as a carry-on to plane. 19-May-2001 pat ID213 Would You Like to Add a Travel Tip?We welcome QUALITY travel tips from our users.Note: you will be required to enter the characters from a security image, so please make sure that you have your browser set to view images.
