The FIRST floor is the one above the GROUND floor The Old Mill Private Hotel, Nannerch, North Wales, UK ID1126 - The UK is well-known as being one of the more expensive European countries to visit. Currently, this is especially the case for visitors from the US, who are suffering from the unfavorable exchange rate. One possibility to reduce costs is not to stay in hotels. UK hotels are often very expensive and the quality is sometimes disappointing. Consequently, next time you're visiting the UK, I'd recommend renting a holiday apartment instead. Often very pleasant flats can be found in city centers, and sometimes it is possible to stay for just one night. One company that offers such holiday flats is Centro Stay (www.centrostay.co.uk), which offers serviced apartments in York. However, there are no doubt countless other such companies in all British cities. Staying in a flat enables visitors to have a great deal more privacy than a hotel. Additionally, almost all flats will feature a kitchen, thus allowing visitors to save money by preparing their own food. James Brown ID2078 - When availing yourself of services in the United Kingdom, a lot of confusion arises over how much to tip. Taxi drivers expect between 10-15%, restaurants around 15% (although this is often included in the bill nowadays, check the bill before paying), hotel porters around £2-£3 depending on how hard they have worked for you, but that's about it really. The only other time you tip is if you are especially pleased with a service performed for you by a person, be it a gardener, craftsman, builder and so on, but the norm is for these people to bill you for their services anyway, so a tip is not expected. Michael Scoates ID53 - When travelling in London, learn the tube system beforehand. This way you will not be completely lost for the first 2 days. There are several websites that have a complete listing of tube maps and station depots for viewing. Looking at St. Paul's is much more interesting than looking at the inside of a tube station. K. Broome ID382 - In the UK, you can use your Cirrus card to take money directly out of the ATMs. It used to be the case that you needed a 4-digit PIN, but I believe your 6-digit one is OK now (double check with your bank). Travellers' cheques can only be cashed in banks, NOT used as general currency. Here in Scotland, we have different looking notes than in England (and we still have £1 notes as well as £1 and £2 coins). Although still legal tender, some places in England will not accept our notes, so make sure you change them back to English notes (or spend ALL your change!) before leaving Scotland.
