3 4 5 [Next] - When availing yourself of services in the United Kingdom, a lot of confusion arises over how much to tip. Taxi drivers expect between 10-15%, restaurants around 15% (although this is often included in the bill nowadays, check the bill before paying), hotel porters around £2-£3 depending on how hard they have worked for you, but that's about it really. The only other time you tip is if you are especially pleased with a service performed for you by a person, be it a gardener, craftsman, builder and so on, but the norm is for these people to bill you for their services anyway, so a tip is not expected. 21-Apr-2001 Michael Scoates ID53 - When travelling in London, learn the tube system beforehand. This way you will not be completely lost for the first 2 days. There are several websites that have a complete listing of tube maps and station depots for viewing. Looking at St. Paul's is much more interesting than looking at the inside of a tube station. 12-Nov-2001 K. Broome ID382 - In the UK, you can use your Cirrus card to take money directly out of the ATMs. It used to be the case that you needed a 4-digit PIN, but I believe your 6-digit one is OK now (double check with your bank). Travellers' cheques can only be cashed in banks, NOT used as general currency. Here in Scotland, we have different looking notes than in England (and we still have £1 notes as well as £1 and £2 coins). Although still legal tender, some places in England will not accept our notes, so make sure you change them back to English notes (or spend ALL your change!) before leaving Scotland. Kyleakin Village, Isle of Skye 18-Dec-2003 Kyleakin Village, Isle of Skye ID1113 - If you are travelling in Scotland, despite its reputation for being cold and wet, don't assume that this will be the case. Many of our guests arrive in summer with heavy sweaters and nothing cool to wear. Instead, make sure you have layers of clothes that you can peel off or put on as necessary. When the sun shines it gets pretty hot, but it can cool off equally quickly. Do bring a waterproof jacket or raincoat and one warm sweater - if you are lucky you may not need it. 13-Dec-2003 Clach Mhuilinn B&B, Inverness, Scotland ID1114 - When traveling in the United Kingdom, make sure you always use your best manners. Politeness is appreciated and expected here more than in any other place in Europe. 22-Apr-2001 Laura Rocks ID119 Would You Like to Add a Travel Tip?We welcome QUALITY travel tips from our users.Note: you will be required to enter the characters from a security image, so please make sure that you have your browser set to view images.
