  • General Options When Renting a Ship

  • - There are three general options when you rent a ship:
    1. You charter a boat, complete with crew.
    2. You 'bareboat' it. (You sail it yourself, with no supporting crew provided, and take full responsibility.)
    3. You 'bareboat' with a captain. (You sail yourself, but the captain directs you and your guests.)
The choice you make will depend largely on what kind of vacation you're looking for, and on your sailing knowledge (don't even think about taking to the high seas without sufficient experience or a capable supporting crew).

If your idea of a good time is executing the tasks of a sailor, you'll want to bareboat or bareboat with captain - but if you don't know much about the sea, your best bet is to charter a ship with a crew. Whatever you decide, you'll need to discuss your itinerary before setting out.

Yes, weather is a governing factor - and it may change on a whim - but you'll need to know at least how long you intend to be out.

  • Goa, India Tips

  • - When travelling to Goa in India:
    1. The people are very poor. Pack some extra candy, pens and paper, unwanted clothes, etc. for the children - who will appreciate these very much. The adults also love old lipsticks, nailpolish, perfume etc.
    2. Do not exchange your money back from Rupees to your currency at the airport when returning home - you will be ripped off by the rate!
    3. Beach shacks offer good value for money for eating out - The Big Banana is a good one in Baga Beach.
    4. Do not leave paperbacks or any kind of fruit unattended at the beach - wandering cows come and eat them up - even with plastic bags on them and you daren't try to extricate them!

  • Tips for Public Washrooms in India

  • - There are few public bathrooms available in most places in India and many of them will not meet the hygienic standard that most people are used to. Further, some of them could be of the squatting type and they might not have any toilet paper. Hence, make use of the good and clean bathroom facilities whenever and wherever they are available. If you need to use such services, try those available in restaurants and hotels. It is also advisable to carry a roll of toilet paper in your bag when you are traveling.
