  • High Altitude Tips
    - Remember that travelling to high altitudes for ski vacations may take some adjustment. Upon arrival, drink plenty of liquids, restrict vigorous activity for the first day, and avoid alcohol and caffeine for the first twenty-four hours. Altitude illness can spoil a vacation, causing nausea, headache, and difficulty breathing. If you have had problems before in travelling to high altitude, consult your doctor about a prescription for Diamox, which should be taken a few days before arrival and continued several days into your trip. Happy skiing!

  • Personal Products and Diapers in Japan
    - When you travel to Japan with small children, diapers (and female sanitary products) are better quality, innovative, and a good price. Take the minimum and enjoy shopping there!

  • Travel in the Former Soviet Countries
    - When traveling to Uzbekistan or any of the former Soviet countries, avoid so-called official travel agencies - they mark up ticket prices and require that you pay in cash.

Make sure your documents are in good condition. One traveler was charged $8 every time an official or policeman looked at his wrinkled and water-stained documents.

Avoid renting a car. It is much cheaper to take a taxi everywhere and you won't be stopped by every policemen for a tip (bribe).

Try to find a translator, preferably female, before your trip. If she is normally paid $40 or $50 dollars a week, negotiate on the side with her to give her double the amount. You will not believe how much you will save. On my first trip to Uzbekistan I spent $150 a night on what was called a 4-star hotel - wasn't worth it. The second time I went my translator (who was very happy with my offer to upgrade her salary) found me a beautiful 5-room apartment that belonged to one of her mother's friends for $25 a night. She also exchanged my US dollars at the black market, so instead of getting the standard 129 soms to the dollar she came back with 850 soms to the dollar.

If you are staying a middle-of-the-road hotel and need to get sleep, make sure you unplug the phone after 8 PM or you will have the hookers that work the hotel calling you all night.

  • Try Touring Via Ferry
    - If you are visiting a city which has a good waterway system, it is a good idea to explore the city on a local ferry. You slowly imbibe the city's culture, observe local people, and watch the panaroma gradually unfold - all this without making a big hole in your pocket.
