- Remember that travelling to high altitudes for ski vacations may take some adjustment. Upon arrival, drink plenty of liquids, restrict vigorous activity for the first day, and avoid alcohol and caffeine for the first twenty-four hours. Altitude illness can spoil a vacation, causing nausea, headache, and difficulty breathing. If you have had problems before in travelling to high altitude, consult your doctor about a prescription for Diamox, which should be taken a few days before arrival and continued several days into your trip. The second time I went my translator (who was very happy with my offer to upgrade her salary) found me a beautiful 5-room apartment that belonged to one of her mother's friends for $25 a night. She also exchanged my US dollars at the black market, so instead of getting the standard 129 soms to the dollar she came back with 850 soms to the dollar.
