4 5 6 7 [Next] - Las Vegas has been caught in a slowing economy and the effect has been to put almost everything on sale at 50% or less compared with rates as recently as 6 months ago. This winter, hotels like the Monte Carlo, which were previously $150 a month, are offering $40-a-night rooms with casino credits thrown in. Even the most luxurious hotels such as the Wynn and Palazzo are beckoning visitors with dramatic discounts. Dining in the hotel/casinos now offers a fixed price option to the open menu rate in many cases. Pursuing ethnic off/Strip restaurants can offer an even greater value without sacrificing the gourmet standards associated with the celebrity chef hotel venues. Last month, we dined at the Ping Pang Pong (Zagat rated) gourmet Chinese restaurant located in the Gold Coast Casino - an incredible melange of tastes which totaled a very reasonable $46 for two with wine included! Several Strip locations sell same-day top show tickets at real reductions. We found Bette Midler at the Caesar's Palace at 30% off and the Cirque de Soleil KA show at the MGM Grand at 50% off. Both shows were world-class in their presentation, staging, and performance. Add in reduced demand and fuel costs providing air ticket prices that were unimaginable just last summer and you have the ingredients of a great vacation at an unbeatable price! They sometimes do not realize that the volcano is at a cool and sometimes cold 4000 ft. elevation and in a rain forest that often exceeds 200 inches a year. So for those who wish to visit the world famous Kilauea Volcano they should be reminded that they may need warm clothes, rain gear or a 'large clear garbage bag' and a flashlight 'for those who wish to see the night show' (required by the National Forestry Service). Many have missed seeing the volcano after spending thousands of dollars in travel costs to see it by not having these tips. Hale Maluhia Country Inn B&B, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii Hale Maluhia Country Inn B&B, Kailua-Kona, Hawaii ID1054 - Hawaii is one of the sportfishing capitals of the world, but it's not for everyone. It's vital that you review the boats available and see which trips best match your group's needs. Looking for action for the kids? Look for a trip that combines BOTH bottom fishing and sportfishing. Sportfishing is rigorous work, and requires patience. A trip that concentrates solely on sportfishing will NOT be appreciated by younger members of your group. At least with bottom fishing, children will have the opportunity to land a fish themselves, albeit a small one (under 10 pounds). Mixed party onboard? Be sure that the boat you charter has private head (bathroom) facilities. If the boat in question does not mention this, be SURE to ask. MauiFishing.com MauiFishing.com ID1051 - When staying at a casino/hotel in Las Vegas, try to do most of your gambling in your own hotel. Ask the cashier for a 'players card', and show it to the dealer (or insert it in the slot machine) before you start playing. At the end of your stay, the price of your room will be adjusted downward depending on how much you play. If you're going to gamble anyway, you may as well have it lower the price of your room. Las Vegas Vacation Guide ID1418 - When travelling to Canada you're eligible to receive a refund for the tax you paid on some things that you bring out of the country - and hotel costs. The government provides a form, but it's kind of a pain. Some hotels offer Refund Release cards which are low or no cost - all you do is sign and date the card and drop in the mail from home and you get a check in the mail, BUT it only applies to accommodation refunds. BEWARE: a couple of the companies that are offering a 'Tax Back Service' are taking a LARGE portion of the refund - in Whistler, B.C., many of the hotels will sign you up unless you SPECIFICALLY REFUSE. Worst case is that on a $14 refund they will take $12.50 - $13.10! The hotels make over $25,000 per year off of tourists' money. Watch when you're mailing in your return, too. Companies have forms that are very similar to the government forms. If you're not going to use the Refund Release cards and do it by hand, make sure you grab the right form.
