  • Montreal Subway Tips

  • - When in Montreal, it is much easier to take the metro and bus system than to drive. The police are extremely strict when it comes to driving, and unlike in the States, there is NO right turn on red in most of the city and outlying areas. Also, the automated announcements on the metro are in French and can be difficult to understand, even if you speak the language. So pay close attention to where you are when riding and remember to GRAB YOUR BUS TRANSFER TICKET - otherwise you may have to pay again. Scottie.

  • New England Knowhow

  • - Mother Nature is fickle, so seeing New England fall foliage at its peak is a crap shoot, at best. Here are a few tips to increase your chance of seeing brilliant coloration on your visit to New England:
    • For Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, your best bet is anywhere from the last week of September through the first week or two of October.
    • The 3-day weekend around the Columbus Day holiday is often associated with peak foliage in Massachusetts, New York, Connecticut, and Rhode Island, but there are no guarantees.
    • Foliage updates are available online and by phone for the New England states and New York - calling ahead once the season is in progress is never a bad idea.
    • Be mobile. Driving to or renting a car once you have arrived in New England can open up your opportunities for going to where the best leaves are.

  • Pack Light for Hawaii Trips

  • - If you're planning to go to Hawaii, pack extremely light. A couple of polos and T-shirts, with some khaki or jean shorts go a long way! Also, the islands are very casual, so even the fanciest restaurant will not require formal attire, only an 'Aloha' shirt and a pair of slacks. Not to mention, bring two or three swimsuits for each week you've planned to stay. One more thing, if you plan to visit the sunrises on any of the volcanoes in Hawaii, bring a sweatshirt. It gets chilly up there, and the observatories have no heaters!

  • Save Taxi Fare in Vegas

  • - When visiting Las Vegas, insist that the taxi driver NOT take you through the tunnel when exiting the airport. All of the tourist areas (Las Vegas Strip and Historic Downtown Fremont Street) are to the north. The airport connector tunnel heads south and will add 20-40% to your fare!

  • Select an Approved Bed and Breakfast

  • - When traveling, to get the biggest bang for your buck in accommodations anywhere in the USA, select from a growing number of bed & breakfasts that are part of a B&B association.
