  • Keep Cash for Departure Tax

  • - When traveling in Latin America always remember that in almost every Latin country the day you leave you have to pay a departure tax, at the airport, before you are allowed to board your flight. The amount has to be paid in cash. Also keep in mind that when traveling to Brazil US citizens need a visa as well as the passport.

  • Lack of Spanish a Problem?

  • - While travelling in South-America I have noticed that lots of travellers don't speak Spanish. They tell me it's no problem, but they do agree that it would get their trip to another level if they would be able to speak and have real conversation with the locals.

So, for Quito, Ecuador: Studying Spanish at Equinoccial Spanish School - great atmosphere, fun teachers. You will learn Spanish in no time, I did! And it does make my a trip a lot better, being able to really speak to people from here, not only to see the highlights together with other backpackers. And combining it with a voluntary project even made me learn a lot more.

  • Money Tips for South America

  • - It pays to take a few travellers cheques with you, especially if you travel to Argentina. They have a shortage of cash and if you dont get to the ATM early, they may run out of money. If your bank card doesn't work, you could find yourself in trouble.

Keep your coins, as precise change is needed for the buses. In Colombia, don't change money at a money exchange at airports. Instead, find an ATM in the terminal. If not, they will only give you a 2 to 1 exchange rate when the real rate can be 6 to 1. (I am talking $US). Happy travelling!

  • Travel Tip for Quito on a Sunday

  • - If you plan on visiting Ecuador's Capital City Quito on a Sunday, take note that vehicles are not permitted in the old historic quarter on this day. This means it's a great time to stroll around and admire the colonial architecture. It also means that if you arrive in Quito on a Sunday in taxi, and your hotel is in the historic quarter, you will have to walk to get there - not fun with lots of bags!

  • When You Book a Flight to Uruguay, Be Careful about the Connecting Flight in Buenos Aires

  • - Many long haul flights to Uruguay have a plane change in Buenos Aires. There are two airports in Buenos Aires. One is Ministro Pistarini International Airport , commonly known as Ezeiza International Airport (Airport code: EZE) . The other is Aeroparque J. Newberry (Airport Code: AEP). Sometimes when you book a trip online, the booking engine will have you arrive in Buenos Aries at EZE, but the connection to or from Montevideo, Uruguay, is through AEP. These airports are not close together! If this happens, you need to go through customs, leave EZE, take a long freeway taxi ride, and then go the other airport. (And who know about your luggage.) So to avoid having this happen to you, simply make sure that both your arrival and your connection are from EZE.
