  • Suitcase Alarm

  • - Recently, my mother-in-law, a travel agent, was on a family trip to Brussels. Someone had given her a special alarm to attach to her suitcase. The alarm sends out a loud sound if someone tries to pick up a suitcase and walk away with it. As luck would have it, she was making a phone call at the airport, and while doing so, a person picked up her suitcase and the alarm went off. She turned around quickly as the person fled without it. It prevented the theft of her bag. When she returned, she said that the alarm had been given to her after being found at a flea market. Before we went on our vacation this summer, we found the same alarm on the internet. Several companies sell it, but a company called Pentagon Defense Products had it for the cheapest price - around $7.00. It's worth its weight in gold.

  • Think Before Answering the Knock on the Hotel Door

  • - When staying in a hotel, NEVER answer the hotel room door before verifying who the person is. If the person claims to be a hotel employee and you didn't request any hotel employee at that time, ALWAYS call the front desk to verify that the person has a reason for being at your room. It may seem rude to you to turn someone away, but this very act can help protect you and your family. For more safety tips go to Safety Tips 411.

  • Try to Blend In

  • - When traveling internationally, remember that not everyone likes Americans. Learn something about the culture you'll be enjoying and try to blend in. Dress in neutral tones and try not to talk or laugh loudly - it draws unnecessary attention to yourself. Obvious tourists are obvious targets.

  • Washroom Advice

  • - When using a public washroom, never EVER leave anything of value on the inside hooks of the door or on the floor. Put them on your lap.
