- Think long and hard about accepting group reservations during the peak season; i.e., for two or more couples. There are often changes in plans and you often get stuck. Gower House Bed and Breakfast, St. John's Newfoundland, Canada ID1282 - Never accept B&B reservations without a cash deposit or a VISA card during the busy season. You are on hold for the entire day and you will be very very frustrated if you turn away other guests for a non-paying no show. MasterCard is not acceptable as they always side with the customer. If the customer says he/she called to cancel, then it is your problem. Likewise if they call to cancel before 6 p.m. Rooms are not like socks. They have no value the day after. Gower House Bed and Breakfast, St. John's Newfoundland, Canada ID1283 - Rates ... what's too low or too high? Most other innkeepers say that our rates are too low. We can certainly say we're the most economical B&B in our area. We did the exact opposite as most innkeepers do ... we started up there with everybody else and then lowered our rates! Tough decision, we admit. But, then we decided it was either sit with empty rooms at a higher price or lower our rates and stay booked up! A house full of guests seemed smarter to us! So we encourage new innkeepers of small B&Bs who really want to get started and bring that money in ... set your rates where you think they should be ... not where your competitors think they should be! We go the extra mile to make our guests feel they're really getting their money's worth ... and we have lots of guests to enjoy!
