  • Ask Questions

  • - We always ask our guests when they are checking out if there was anything else we could have done to have made their stay better, including questions such as, 'Was everything all right with the room?', 'Was there anything else you needed?' ... etc. By probing for the smallest items we find the minor things that need attention (door latch didn't catch, light burnt out) that might not seem important to the guest - but helps us. We have also received lots of ideas that we had not thought about (such as: carafe by the beds for those who take pills or like water at night). Most importantly, the guests feel that you really care about them, and it's great promotion!

  • Be Sensitive to Guest Needs

  • - Be sensitive to the varied needs of your guests. Sometimes guests enjoy and invite the company of a host or hostess; other times they appreciate being alone - or just spending time with each other. When a couple lets you know it's their anniversary or that the weekend is the first time they've had a chance to really be together in months, chances are they don't need your smiling face more than necessary. It is a nice gesture to acknowledge their special time with a pretty card or appropriate breakfast entree, such as heart shaped waffles served on your best 'special occasion' china.

  • Breakfast Talk

  • - My bed and breakfast is small, so when my guests are settled in, we have a 'breakfast talk'. I find out if they have any allergies, or special likes and dislikes, and whether they drink regular coffee, decaf, or hot tea. I also ask if they prefer a substantial breakfast or light fare. Many of my guests are business travelers who are up and out early. A breakfast of juice, a fruit compote, and muffins or croissants is about all they want to face at such an early hour. We also arrive at a convenient time for breakfast to be served, so they can get where they need to be on time, and I assure them that a tray with their choice of early morning beverages will be waiting in the hall when they're ready to start their day.

  • Choice of Pillows

  • - At Cranberry Ridge, each of our beds have four different types of pillows. Some guests might like a soft, downy pillow while another might prefer a medium to firm one. I always say 'Take your pick ... you'll find one just right for you!

  • Consider Ground Level Accommodation

  • - When renovating for, or building a new B&B, consider ground level accommodation for those unable to climb stairs. Wider entrances and interior passageways for wheelchair and walker access allow those with limited mobility to stay at your establishment. Access Canada provides extensive information on how to outfit your B&B accommodation for those with disabilities of all types; home care aids and hospital supply stores are also very helpful. Features such as these can improve your business, since there is limited accommodation for seniors and people with disabilities.
