  • Make a Map
    - Make a local map that shows the area attractions as a giveaway 'compliments of you'. Naturally your place will show up the very best on the map! Ours has been a very big hit - not only with the guests but also with the visitor center personnel who are busy handing them out and doing our advertising for us.

  • Make Your Leaflet Noticeable
    - For all you tourism operators who have your own glossy brochure or leaflet advertising your accommodations or attraction, here are three essential rules for making your leaflet noticeable:
    • Always print the most important information at the very top of the leaflet; i.e., 'Billy's Bear Farm' or 'The Top Hotel in Newton'. This way you ensure that your message can be seen by people browsing through a rack or leaflet dispenser. If the message is too low down it will be hidden by the leaflets in front!
    • Keep them colourful! You can be sure that the potential tourist will always go for a brochure with plenty of primary colours and bold headings. Those black and white ones just get left to gather dust.
    • Finally, and most obviously, the words 'FREE VOUCHER INSIDE' always attract attention. Even if it's only for a cup of coffee, people like to think they're getting a bargain.

  • Online Reservation Form
    - Be careful using an online reservation or availability inquiry feedback form on your website. From a terrible experience, we have learned that you must put a disclaimer on the form advising the inquirer that the form is only for purposes of inquiry, or to enable the lodging establishment to know your lodging needs and arrival and departure times. There are people out there who assume that just filling in a 'reservation request' form means that they in fact 'have' a reservation, and they they are shocked, dismayed, and offended by the time you reply that the room they requested has been booked to someone else. Most lodging establishments use the rule of thumb that a 'reservation' is not guaranteed until it has been confirmed. To avoid misunderstandings, it is best to include a small paragraph on your online request form that is very clear about your reservation policies, and how the form is to be used.

  • Website Photos
    - A good B&B or vacation rental web site saves time/energy. We make many changes based on guest feedback. Use lots of photos, inside, outside, the neighborhood. Use wide-angle lens on the inside so you get more than a picture of a lamp next to a bed! Web sites with a lot of text are tiresome, and seldom read in detail. Instead let a picture take the space of a thousand words. Be brief, to the point.

The web is swarming with people 'looking for a deal' Your bookings will increase if you offer an 'internet special' - even if it's as little as a $5 discount, it's still a deal.

Cover as many topics on separate pages if possible (rates, policies, amenities, directions, maps, links to area shops, dining, links to weather stations, history of your community) anything you can think of that people have asked you over the phone. Your guests will know a lot about you by the time they call, and by then, they'll probably have made up their minds. You won't be spending a lot of time on the phone going through your 'shpeal' only to result in a non-booking.

CHECK YOUR EMAIL at least 3 times a day, and respond within 24 hours. Your potential guests gauge your service by promptness of your response. Wait too long, and they may be on to something else. Be fluent when you respond. Short curt replies can be interpreted as abrupt disinterest.

Once successfully booked, and pleased with their stay, your internet guests will likely get back on the net and pass your URL around to all their chatroom friends. Good Luck!

Editor's Note: Photos are great, and so is lots of information; however, do not make the mistake of posting numerous pages and photos 'just because'. Every word and every photo should be there for a specific reason. Also be sure that you know how to properly prepare your photos and graphics for the internet so that your pages will load quickly.
