A lot of times the 'traditional' mostly-inside planned vacations aren't too great for the kids. Make sure you stop frequently on road trips to let the kids run around and play outside for a while. If you're staying at a hotel or in one location, find a local square, park, pile of rocks (especially good when wandering around Great Britain - all those castles!) that the kids can play in - run, scream, torture siblings, etc. It helps ease stress. Tess Bohn ID941 - If your child is traveling alone, you should write all the numbers that would be helpful for the child on a note, or in a little date book for when she/he arrives at the final destination. Catarina Baldissera ID909 - The most successful idea we use is crafting in the car. We use serving trays to create their crafts on top of. Before we leave, I prepare all of the projects we can make, and once we are travelling, it is up to them. The serving trays also work wonderfully for puzzles, board games, and play dough. Richelle Thomas ID919 - Consider a home exchange vacation to both save money when visiting expensive cities and to have a comfortable base to return to after a day of sightseeing. Families with children have a much more relaxing vacation on an exchange than when cooped up in a hotel room. If you swap with another family with children of similar ages to your own, your children will have a whole new range of toys, books - and even local playmates! My 4-year-old delights in unwrapping them to see what's inside. This is a great tip for plane rides. (Make sure to keep a trash bag next to him, though).
