Every 1 to 2 hours they get a bag with a snack and drink, or inexpensive toy (crayons, silly putty, play-doh, items from the dollar store). We started this when my oldest was two and at age nine, it still works. They can't wait to see what is inside. The TV with built-in VCR is also a life-saver. It has an adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter. My husband swears that it is the best investment I ever made. (Also comes in handy when one of the boys has to go to work with me.) 26-Jun-2001 Elizabeth Powell ID270 - Last school vacation our family tried something different - a home exchange for 10 days with another family on the other side of our country. My first concern, would our house be trashed? The other family had the same concern. We had a terrific time, no worries or concerns about exchanging homes. We got to know our exchange partners well through letters and mail. Accommodation cost was zero and we could take our pet dog - a luxury that isn't always possible when staying at a hotel. Travelling with our toddler was made easier by him having his own room and lots of space to play compared to a hotel room. We saved over $900 in accommodation costs by swapping homes and instead of leaving our home vacant for 2 weeks, we had a wonderful exchange couple staying there visiting our community. I would highly recommend you consider a home exchange for an affordable holiday. Just use common sense in choosing an exchange partner. 80,000 people exchange homes for vacations and weekend getaways each year. 4-Aug-2005 Families Helping Families with Home Exchanges ID23 - You played them as a youth - now it's your chance to pass along the family favorites to the young un's. The license game - ever so popular on those cross country journeys - would work for the preteen set. Toddlers and preschoolers can help learn their colors by identifying the colors of cars. And be sure you learn a few family type songs. Even if your voice isn't of concert quality, you're sure to at least amuse your children. And if that doesn't work, you can always pawn them off on other drivers by getting them to wave to people from the back seat! The Caldwell Family Showcase of Adventures 1-Jan-2000 The Caldwell Family Showcase of Adventures ID947 - This tip works when traveling with older children. At the beginning of the trip give them a dollar or 2 for each day. They are then responsible to buy all those little treats they want (like sodas or a snack). They can keep any money they don't spend. This keeps the kids from begging to buy everything they see. I find my children don't want as many snacks - they prefer to keep the cash! I spend less and don't have to deal with whining children! 22-Apr-2001 Jean Kaiser ID166 - If you plan to be driving into the night, bring glowsticks for each child. They will be occupied until they fall asleep. 7-Sep-2002 Sophia ID957 Would You Like to Add a Travel Tip?We welcome QUALITY travel tips from our users.Note: you will be required to enter the characters from a security image, so please make sure that you have your browser set to view images.
